Chapter 9 – Alan

Alan felt like he’d been walking through some horrible nightmare for so long that he’d lost track completely of time. Ever since he’d found the empty bedroom, the broken door, some part of him had frozen solid, and he was terrified of what would happen when it thawed. Frozen in there was his shame, his guilt, his knowledge that it was all his fault… if he hadn’t left her side like the coward he was, he’d have been there when the gang came for her. He’d have been able to protect her, fight for her, keep her safe. But instead, he’d fled into the night like a rat, needing space to process his own precious feelings. And to think he’d been about to walk back into that apartment and tell her that the two of them couldn’t be together. How could he ever have been so blind, so stupid? If he was ever lucky enough to set eyes on her again, he wasn’t going to let her out of his sight. To hell with his job, to hell with his whole life. Naomi was the only thing that had ever mattered to him. He only wished it hadn’t taken losing her to realize that.

But it didn’t matter. All that mattered was the search. If it killed him, he was going to get her home safe.

He worked methodically, like a robot—first moving through the apartment and taking photos of everything, taking notes aloud on his phone in a voice that only shook a little. He’d called for backup the minute the worst of the shock cleared, and it wasn’t long before medics were seeing to the unconscious guy in the car—he came around quickly, woozy but unharmed, to Alan’s relief. From the smell in the bedroom, the gang had used the same chemical on Naomi… that was why there was no sign of a struggle, no blood. Maybe why the quilt was missing, too. Had they wrapped her unconscious body up and carried her out?

They’d taken her alive. He had to cling to that. If they’d wanted her dead, they’d have killed her here, wouldn’t they? That was enough hope to stop him falling into a pit of despair, and he clung to it with all his strength.

It was the middle of the night when he got back to the station, but sleep wasn’t an option. Not until Naomi was home… or his body gave out completely, and he knew from experience he was at least a solid day away from that kind of catastrophe. He stuffed a protein bar into his mouth as he worked on his computer, mindless fuel. Something had gone catastrophically wrong with the apartment block’s security system… something deliberate, that much was clear. Not only had none of the alarms gone off—and there were multiple failsafes that were supposed to be immune to tampering—all the security camera footage was scrambled, too. He forwarded all the data to his best IT contact, a firm that operated out of a secret shifter city in Texas called Volentis.
